Making music on a computer

A computer can be a recording studio, it can be an instrument, a source of infinite sound and tone. It can create beats, arrange orchestras, mix tracks and process vocals. You can start with loops, noises, samples and templates or simply with a sheet of blank paper. Whatever sort of music, whatever sound or adventure you're after, whether digital or analogue, live or virtual, quantised or free-form the computer can be the medium through which you produce your music.

Building your own
Audio PC

To get the most out of the current technology component choices can be vital.
Many off-the-shelf computers are underpowered, use cheap parts and are not
ideally suited to music production. They are designed for the popular pursuits
of surfing the net, playing music and watching movies. Building your own PC
gives you control over the components, allowing you to construct a powerful and
focused system, while learning an invaluable amount about how computers work.

What about Apple?

Apple build high quality, decent PCs. They run a single operating system on a limited range of hardware which makes for a tight and stable platform. Apple make awesome computers. With Windows and a decent PC from a specialist audio PC builder, or a well-thought-out self-build, you can have the same level of high quality system, but one which is more compatible, more open and expandable, runs more software, supports more legacy and future technologies and will out-perform the Mac in almost every situation. Oh, and it's much better value.
